All About English Language Learning

Whether English is a first language or one of many, it is important to know the tips and tricks to learning with ease.

Over the past 6 years, I have learned so much about being an English Learning teacher. I have found that the key to learning is interaction. Interaction can be accomplished in many ways, but the most powerful is play. Kids and adults alike enjoy challenges that help them grow in their confidence and interest in each topic. I have found that the simplest games can make a powerful impact on students. There are many different aspects of the English language that can be used in play. These include phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammar.

For example, the beginning to learning a language is figuring out the letters and their sounds. This can be accomplished by bingo, memory, and even hangman. Students can use guess and check to better understand the connection between letters and sounds. From then, students can combine sounds to make words. The fastest way to learn the most basic words is through word families. This also builds on the skill of rhyme. By finding patterns in words, students take off in their reading. Once students have mastered decoding words, we can level up into building reading fluency. One of the best strategies to make reading fluid is repeated reading. Students find ease when tackling sentences word by word. Once each word has been decoded, reading a complete sentence is no challenge.

Reading is an important skill that we use everyday, but decoding is equally as important as comprehending what you read. This is where the emphasis of vocabulary comes into play. I find that including visuals along with phonics helps students build a sense of the English language in a profound way. This is when pictionary and guess the mystery picture games are useful. Students can use clues to connect their background knowledge to new vocabulary words and spelling patterns. It is important to keep in mind that knowledge of vocabulary is strengthened when words relate to each other. The concept of theme and thematic play can be used  in this case.

Thematic play allows the real world and imagination to combine. Students of any age can imagine themselves in a certain situation and use key vocabulary to help them navigate. The more real life connections are made, the more likely students are going to use the vocabulary they are using in everyday circumstances. I always find it important to call on the individual’s personal preferences. It is the best way to engage student learning and opportunities to dive deeper into each topic.

Helping students achieve their goals in a fun and meaningful way has been a passion of mine since moving abroad. I have been amazed at the many goals my students have accomplished with a student and play based philosophy! I look forward to helping you and your family do the same.
